Faster Data Transfer Rates for ETHERNET Remote I/O Using Modbus TCP

16-Nov-2010

Industrial Ethernet is currently a hot topic, and for a good reason: You can meet Zone 1 requirements with Industrial Ethernet. Integration into existing systems is easy because the ETHERNET Remote I/O is based on the standard Modbus TCP protocol.

Remote I/Ocan now operate at higher transfer rates. Remote I/O systems build a bridge between traditional field instruments and Ethernet with data transfer rates up to 100 Mb/s.

The image below shows the structure of a plant in a hazardous area that can be operated locally or from a central control point. The Ethernet connection is available with increased safety, while the field signals have an intrinsically safe connection. The high transfer frequencies require LWL connections for long distances, while the copper lines are suitable for shorter distances up to 100 m.

ETHERNET Remote I/Ouses existing proven in use I/O modules which now link all the functions required for process instrumentation to the Industrial Ethernet. They allow the combination of analog and digital signals in the same slave. The modules support:

  • NAMUR type inputs
  • Switching signals and solenoid valve outputs
  • Temperature inputs
  • Supply of 2 or 4-wire transmitters, proportional valves and positioners

As in all our Remote I/O systems, maintenance is possible without a hot work permit because the replacement of modules does not affect bus traffic.
